Provinces here in the Philippines have its own unique and wonderful paradise. Like the Pagsanjan Falls in Pangasinan, Mt. Mayon in Albay, Chocolate Hills in Bohol and many more. But Isabela will not be behind of those provinces. Eventually, Isabela was known for being the Queen of the North and also known for having beautiful sceneries, cultures and traditions, delicious foods, and fresh fruits but most especially its prestigious and one of the largest dam so called- the Magat Dam.
Magat Dam of Isabela was constructed in 1982. After its construction, it considers as one of the largest dam here in the Philippines because of its reservoir area of 4,450 hectares and also considered as the largest multipurpose dam in the Philippines. Magat Dam was known for its two purposes: (1) the source of irrigation of water in almost 85,000 hectares of farmlands and (2) the source of hydroelectric power. The dam itself supplies electricity in the whole Isabela!
The Magat Dam is located at the boundary between the municipalities of Alfonso, Lista Ifugao and Ramon, Isabela. It is approximately 350 kilometres away from Metro Manila.
During rainy season, water on the dam gets higher that the dam needed to let go a lot of water because it reaches its maximum level which is 193 meters and exceeded on its normal level which is 178.3 meters. But when El Nino comes, waters got lower and lower that it reaches its minimum level which is 160 meters.
As time passes by, the beauty of Magat Dam still remains; even when calamities like earthquake and fish kill strikes the place. But of course caretakers renovated it. No one will hide the beauty of the Magat Dam. It’s too obvious that people who got there says “the beauty of this paradise was breath-taking”. Even us, can also say that.
All in all, we can not define the beauty of Magat Dam in just one word; too many adjective words are needed to describe it.
If you would ask, how to get there?
Here are some way, from Santiago city, Isabela ride on a jeepney or a van going to the town of Ramon and then ask the driver to drop you in the junction going to the dam. Ride a tricycle with the fare of PHP 25.00 each and PHP 125.00 in one charter ride. You’ll enjoy the ride, I swear!
